A Reddit user said the scariest moment he ever had while hunting came after he thought the dangerous part was already over. According to his comment in the thread, he had shot a black bear and believed it was down for good.

The animal was lying there, not moving, and from his point of view it looked like the hunt was finished. So he did what a lot of hunters do when they are trying to make sure an animal is done. He walked up to it.

He wrote that he got close enough to poke the bear in the eye with the barrel of his gun. That was when the whole thing went sideways.

According to the comment, the bear was still alive.

He said the second the barrel touched the eye, the bear “unleashed,” and the way he told it made it sound like pure chaos from there. What had looked like a dead animal on the ground suddenly turned into a live black bear at point-blank range, with the hunter standing right there close enough to touch it.

He did not spend a bunch of time decorating the story. He did not have to. The image alone does the work: a hunter walks up, nudges the eye with the barrel, and the bear comes alive right in front of him.

He summed up the whole moment in the bluntest possible way, saying he never thought he could “sh*t my pants that fast.” That was basically the story. He thought the bear was dead, got close enough to confirm it with the muzzle of the gun, and found out the hard way that it was not finished yet.

What do you think — if you thought a bear was dead and it suddenly came back to life at arm’s length, would you trust yourself to react, or would you freeze for a second too?
