A Reddit user said one of the scariest moments he ever had in the woods came during gun-deer season, when his hunting party decided to do a deer drive through a swamp. According to his comment in the thread, he already had one reason to be uneasy before they even started pushing through. Earlier that fall, while bird hunting the same swamp, he had found a bear den in there. So when the group decided to drive deer through that same mess of wet timber and brush, he already knew there was at least a chance they could stir up something bigger than a whitetail.

He wrote that while he was working his way through the swamp, he suddenly heard one of the other hunters in the party — maybe 300 yards away — yell out, “Bear!” That was enough to put him on edge instantly. He said he got extra alert right away, and then almost immediately the timing got worse. As he kept moving, he came up on the bear den itself, sitting only about 50 yards away and directly in his path. So now he had somebody in the swamp yelling about a bear, and right in front of him was the same den he already knew about from earlier in the season.

According to the story, he decided to skirt around the den instead of going anywhere near it head-on. He said he kept his eyes locked on it while easing past, clearly expecting that if something bad happened, it was going to come from there. That was what made the next part so nasty. Because he was so focused on the den, he was not paying enough attention to what was right under his boots. In his path was a big rotting log, and when he stepped on it to get over, it collapsed. He wrote it as “SMASH!” — just one of those awful sudden breaks that happens before you can correct anything.

His boot went straight through the log and landed on something alive.

He said whatever it was started freaking out immediately, thrashing around and trying to get away under his foot. The way he told it, the whole thing happened in the exact wrong mental state. He was already keyed up because of the yelled warning and the bear den, and then the ground basically exploded under him while something living started moving and fighting beneath his boot. He summed up his reaction about as honestly as anyone could, saying he basically thought he had stepped onto the bear itself and nearly messed himself on the spot.

The comment itself did not drag on into some huge explanation of what the animal under the log turned out to be. That honestly made it better. The whole terror was packed into those few seconds: a swamp drive during deer season, a known bear den ahead, somebody yelling “Bear!” from deeper in the timber, the hunter nervously circling the den, then a rotten log giving way and his foot crashing down onto something alive that instantly started thrashing. It was the kind of moment where the mind fills in the worst answer before reality has time to catch up.

He told the story in a way most hunters will recognize immediately. It was not a long dramatic encounter with a clean ending. It was one split-second pileup of bad timing: swamp, bear den, shouted warning, rotting log, and then the feeling of something alive and panicked right under your boot while your mind is already screaming that it has to be the worst possible thing.

What do you think — if you heard “Bear!” in a swamp, spotted a den in your path, and then stepped through a rotten log onto something alive thrashing underneath you, would your brain assume bear too, or would you somehow stay calm long enough to figure it out?
