A Reddit user said the story happened years ago while he was fishing in the river in his city. According to his comment in the thread, he was set up on the bank when two men walked up and started fishing basically right where he was, close enough that their lines could have tangled with his. He wrote that he was already about ready to leave anyway, so he did not make a huge issue out of the crowding. He just wanted a few more casts before packing it in.

Then a woman came walking by on the trail behind them.

He said it was a busy walking trail and that the woman was just passing through like anyone else would. As she went by, he heard one of the men say, “I’d like to cut her up into fish food.” He wrote that the line hit him hard enough that he was stunned. From the way he told it, this was not said like some harmless joke between buddies at normal volume. It was ugly enough and specific enough that he did not want to gamble on it just being dumb talk.

According to the post, he stayed put until the woman came back down the trail because he knew she would have to turn around at the dead end and pass them again. He did not immediately confront the two men or start a fight on the bank. He also did not just pack up and leave her to walk back through them alone. He kept fishing close by and watched the situation until she was safely on her way back out. Only after that did he leave. He added that maybe the guys were just messing around, but he was not willing to leave that to chance.

That was the full story he told in the thread: he was river fishing, two men crowded in beside him, a woman walked by on the trail, and one of the men said he would like to cut her up into fish food. The fisherman stayed near them until the woman came back down the dead-end trail and got past safely, then he left.

What do you think — if you heard somebody say that about a woman walking alone on a trail near your fishing spot, would you stay and keep watch like he did, or call someone right away?
